Aims & Objectives

The stated aims of the TWCT are as follows:

  1. To foster, develop and protect the traditional Māori Performing Arts in the pursuit of Excellence;
  2. To support, encourage and enhance participation in all aspects of traditional Māori Performing Arts and associated Māori cultural art forms; 
  3. To support and enhance the development and provision of traditional Māori Performing Arts at the senior level and at the primary school, secondary school and community level throughout the Tainui Waka region;
  4. To professionally plan, promote and organize the Tainui Waka regional senior Māori Performing Arts or kapa haka festival and any other event or festival in line with the aims of the Trust;
  5. To organize, facilitate, promote or support training that will enhance the administration, participation and/or provision of traditional Māori Performing arts and associated Māori art forms from the Tainui Waka region;
  6. To promote the positive aspects of Tainui Waka traditional Māori Performing Arts and associated Māori art forms and raise awareness, interest and appreciation of Māori arts and culture within the region and at the national and international level;
  7. To advocate on behalf of Māori Performing Arts within the Tainui Waka region and at the national and international level;
  8. To support and assist Māori Performing Arts or kapa haka groups representing the Tainui Waka region at the national and international level;
  9. To enhance Te Reo (the Māori language) and tikanga Māori (Māori custom);
  10. To collate and develop archival material on Tainui Waka Māori Performing Arts and associated Māori art forms (e.g. Regional and National competitions, media articles & multi-media resources);
  11. To provide a professional (effective and efficient), accountable and transparent service to all stakeholders;
  12. To initiate and support research into any aspects of traditional Māori Performing Arts and associated Māori art forms;
  13. To promote traditional Māori Performing Arts as a positive Māori and New Zealand icon;
  14. To facilitate the strategic development and promotion of the traditional Māori Performing Arts and associated Māori art forms affiliated with the Tainui Waka region;
  15. To encourage and support the presentation and promotion of Tainui Waka history, knowledge, song, dance, language, customs and arts through the traditional Māori Performing Arts and associated Māori art forms.
  16. To seek resources required to meet the aims of the Trust and to manage such resources in a financially sound, professional and accountable manner;
  17. To undertake any other purposes within New Zealand which, in accordance with the law of New Zealand for the time being, are charitable, whether such purpose involves the relief of poverty, the advancement of education or religion, or any other object or purpose beneficial to the community and in line with the aims of the Trust.
